VMRC – Oak Lea Renovations
As an aging era continues to grow, the demand for skilled Nursing care is higher now than ever before. With no indication that the need will recede any time soon, retirement communities are busy adapting to that trend. Starting in 2018, with a construction timeline of 16 months, Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community (VMRC) initiated a project geared towards enhancing their short-term rehabilitation offering. With over 48,000 square feet of renovations and a 3,600 square foot addition to Oak Lea, VMRC did just that. Originally, the two-story facility housed patients on the second floor for short-term rehabilitation, but after modifications through renovations to the layout of the facility were made, each patient living at Oak Lea will reside on the main, first floor instead. All 35 of the completely updated, 225 square foot, private rooms, come with their own bathroom and ease of access to the facilities amenities, including the brand new café. The second floor of Oak Lea, however, was repurposed for Administrative and volunteer offices, as well as workrooms, meeting rooms, class rooms, and a 25-seat computer lab. As for the addition, the new home of physical and occupational therapy, patients have access to the latest and greatest rehabilitation equipment and practices. Of those offerings, uniquely, is a simulator that reflects the motions of getting in and getting out of an automobile and an outdoor track designed to exemplify multiple terrain types that patients may encounter outside of VMRC. Needless to say, the new therapy center, and entire project as a whole, is nothing short of topnotch. From the beginning, a lot of emphasis was placed on this project, as it should have been, and we understood the importance of what it was doing for the campus. In the end, through means of clear communication and coordination between VMRC and Nielsen across the board over the entirety of the project, we were able to deliver a total quality product. Now, Oak Lea, standing completely renewed, is ready to welcome the highly anticipated future of growth.
