James Madison University Showker Hall

Special Features

JMU’s new College of Business building by Newman Lake houses all academic and administrative offi ces and classroom spaces for the college, and provides space for the college’s library.

Named Zane Showker Hall, the 95,000-square-foot building consists of a six-story office tower with offices for more than 125 faculty, support staff, and graduate assistants and a three-story classroom wing with 18 horseshoe-shaped classrooms, a conference center, seminar facilities, computer room, and study rooms. The structure is unique in design in that it utilizes a combination of structural steel and joist framing on the classroom and educational wing, while the six-story office tower is reinforced concrete. Nielsen used its own personnel and equipment to erect the structure.

The Nielsen Partnership

Nielsen has been constructing buildings on the JMU campus for over 40 years. In working with JMU on Showker Hall, Nielsen held meetings every two weeks to ensure that the project continued on target. According to Monty Cox, Nielsen vice president, “The meetings helped keep the overall building project in focus, ensuring specific parts of the project were not only completed on schedule, but were completed with a high level of quality.”

Dr. Robert Holmes, dean of the JMU College of Business, stated, “We believe Zane Showker Hall is the finest college of business building perhaps in the Mid-Atlantic Region, certainly in Virginia.”
