James Madison University Taylor Hall

Special Features

Taylor Hall, an addition to the Warren Campus Center at James Madison University, consisted of 55,280 square feet of new space in four fl oors plus a mechanical lower level and penthouse. Renovations of the ground fl oor included replacement and upgrade of two existing elevators. One of the most challenging aspects of the project was matching the brick and cast stone of the existing Warren Campus Center. In addition, careful planning and scheduling were required to construct a new loading dock and terrace cover without closing the existing dock which served the bookstore and adjacent foodservice areas. The building’s existing chiller was also replaced.

The Nielsen Partnership

The project delivery team met twice monthly to review the project’s progress, schedule, changes, and challenges. The initial competitive bid was suffi ciently within budget to allow the addition of an upgrade to the existing mechanical and energy management, pressure washing of the existing building’s cast stone, resurfacing of the existing exterior terrace deck, and considerably more asbestos abatement than was initially identifi ed. The Nielsen/JMU/architect management team was able to incorporate these modifi cations into the project without signifi cant impact to the overall schedule. Close coordination helped the team accomplish its goals and the design and construction were completed in an expeditious manner.
